Lassie may be a fictional character, but she’s arguably the most famous dog ever. The original Lassie character was a Rough Collie named Pal.

Rin-Tin-Tin was a dog rescued from a French battlefield during World War I by American soldier Lee Duncan. Duncan trained the German Shepherd to get him roles in silent films.

  1. Sinbad, US Coast Guard


Sinbad’s a mixed-breed canine sailor aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter George W. Campbell. Sinbad served 11 years sea duty in the Coast Guard, including combat in World War II.
